2011 APPLICATION TIMETABLE FOR ALL INCOMING FRESHMEN
March 1: The selection committee will begin accepting applications.
April 21: All applications must be time-stamped by 4/21/2011. No applications will accepted after this date.
May 20: Finalists will be contacted and interviews will be scheduled.
June 11: Finalists and their parents/legal guardians will be interviewed.
July 1: 2011 recipient will be announced.
2011 APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The '86 GSB Endowment Scholarship selection committee is committed to maintaining a diverse student body at Boylan. Accordingly, we welcome applications from students of all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. The selection process is made on the basis of a candidate's individual talent, potential, need and ability to positively contribute to the Boylan community.
PLEASE FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY
The application will consist of the following:
1. A completed personal information form (online below)
2. 4 completed essays (online below)
3. A letter of recommendation completed by a current teacher
4. A completed parent statement (online below)
5. Finalists will be required to attend an on campus interview (All candidates must be accompanied by a parent/guardian)
6. A completed financial aid application available at Boylan's main office.
I. Personal Information Form
Please complete all of the relevant fields below.
II. Essays
Respond to each question/statement in a well-developed paragraph of 5 to 8 sentences. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation will be taken into consideration. A total of four essays must be completed. Please make sure your answers are clear and concise. You may want to compose and save your answers in a word document and then copy/paste the text to the boxes below.
1). What is your favorite book and what lessons has it taught you?
2). A senior is a member of the state championship football team, a Kairos retreat leader and a finalist in a creative writing contest. Only one of these may be listed on a college application. Which of these accomplishments would you choose and why?
3). Describe an experience you have had that has tested your faith. How did you respond to this experience?
4). Christopher Columbus once said, “You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” Describe a time in your life where you had to step out of your comfort zone to achieve something.
III. Letter of Recommendation
Please refer a current teacher to GSB86@RCN.COM so that he/she can email a letter of recommendation. Please also ensure that your teacher types your full name in the subject heading.
To the Teacher: Please email an evaluation detailing the applicant's academic and personal strengths and weaknesses. It would also be helpful to comment on the applicant's skill in math and English and to include how long you have known him or her. Please send the final version in word format.
IV. Parent Statement
To the parent or guardian: Please answer each of the following questions (in a paragraph or two in total) .
1. How would you describe your child?
2. Describe some adversity your child has encountered. How did he/she overcome this adversity and how would you evaluate this process? What would you have expected differently?
3. How do you envision your child growing and learning at Boylan? What expectations do you hold for your child beyond Boylan?
